(04-22) 17:26 PDT -- For Bay Area environmentalists, it's the most wonderful time of the year.

"Earth Day is definitely a lot like Christmas for us. We've been planning for this weekend for many, many months," Chrystal Schreck said this morning as she set up a "Planet Drum Foundation" booth at San Francisco's McLaren Park, where hundreds of environmentalists marked the end of a long weekend of binge greening.

McLaren Park Earth Day, one of dozens of Earth Day-related events held across the Bay Area today, included live music with environmentally friendly lyrics, a soy taco stand and a puppet show starring an alternative energy ear of corn. There were nature and dog walks through the often overlooked park. And volunteers cleaned debris from Gray Fox Creek and reintroduced Juncus grass to the area.

Alongside the Planet Drum Foundation were dozens of booths representing The Sierra Club, REI, Rainbow Grocery and other organizations that all handed out pamphlets like stocking stuffers.

"This is the Mecca for environmentalists, but in order to keep it that way, we have to reach out to the children," said Chris Giorni, a member of the "Nature In the City" group that organized the McLaren Park party.

A former high school science teacher, Giorni left teaching to found "Tree Frog Treks," which offers outdoor field trips, camp programs and after-school classes.

"I know some inner-city kids who won't even walk across grass because they don't want to get their shoes dirty and lose credibility with gang members," said Giorni, who came with live props Sunday. Dozens of children got their shoes dirty by lining up to hold Tree Frog Treks' collection of pythons, tarantulas, iguanas, frogs and turtles.

"My favorite thing about Earth Day is getting to pet all these animals," said 9 year-old Doreen Pacini of San Francisco, who passed up the arts and crafts station to work on preserving the specimen of a dead mole she found in the dirt -- something she never gets to do on other holidays, she said.
