An ambitious experiment in the public learning and debate around recent science will be launched April 27, according to a pre-launch media release.

Cliff Lyon of describes EarthPortal as "the result of 650 of the world's top scientists in 49 countries (so far) coming together to produce the highest quality, non-commercial, non-profit resource for information about our planet anywhere in the World."

A Washington Press Club annoucement is planned for April 26, featuring Jane Goodall, Robert Correl and Ambassador Richard Benedick.

EarthPortal will include 'Earth Forum', Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Earth, Cutler Cleveland, describes the Earth Forum as "a moderated  blog that provides you with another outlet to reach the world with your research and opinions on any topic of interest to you, and to engage civil society in a public dialogue on the role of environmental issues in human affairs." is envisioned as a free resource, supported without site advertising.  Public posting is being actively encouraged.
